How did manga turn into such a global phenomenon?
The Dawn of Manga
The earliest form of manga is believed to date back in the 12th century. Manga started to gain its popularity since 1814, when the famous ukiyo-e artist Hokusai Katsushika created his “whimsical pictures” – manga (漫画).
In 1902, Kitazawa Rakuten’s work Jiji Manga inspired one of our modern styles of manga – the 4-koma, which is a page consisted of four comic frames with texts. Since then, Japanese publishing industry also began to run monthly manga magazines, with pioneers like : Shounen Club (yaoi, yaoi manga, yaoi hentai), Shoujo Club (girls oriented), and Yonen Club (lolicon). Unfortunately, the industry took the hard blow from the World War II (1939-1945).
Things started to get less gloomy when the talented Osamu Tezuka, now known as “the Godfather of Manga”, set the new pace for manga with his continuous production of the art. The Disney-influenced art style with cute features, big eyes and exaggerated expressions in Shin Takarajima / New Treasure Island (1947), Tetsuwan Atom / Astro Boy (1952-68), Dororo (1967-68), Hinotori / Phoenix (1956-89) and many more have been the inspiration of later generations.
The Time To Shine
The birth of anime also helped boost manga’s reputation. The first anime TV series ever was Osamu’s Astro Boy aired in Japan in January, 1963 and in the U.S. later in June.
The end of the 20th century is the milestone of when manga and anime began spreading all over the globe. A lot of people grow up watching and reading AKIRA, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Evangelion, or Yu Yu Hakusho. Now, in our years of 2020s, manga is updated daily, hourly, online and offline, simultaneously with Japan’s publication.
Manga, along with their adaptions and merchandise have swept every corner in the world. Localized versions of manga as well as imported Japanese manga and magazines (Manycomic Entertainment) are collected by many readers. Other industries catch on quick with the manga frenzy. Manga-themed café, figures, DVDs, goods and conventions are what is keeping manga on the hype today. Entering 2021, Japan’s entertainment industry has awakened. After being overtaken by Koreans and massively promoting manhwa webtoon products in the game field, the Korean companies refused to give up, they brought in popular titles that global readers were so familiar with, such as Ben 10 games with Ben 10 aliens, ben 10 omniverse, ben 10 reboot or ben 10 omnitrix, batman games, spiderman games, hulk games are popular and instant gaming with millions of free games.
The Japanese entertainment industry is constrained by its bureaucratic work style and emphasis on the domestic market. That is why the manga lags behind manhwa in terms of marketing.
